at the start of a new year, I always spend a bit of time thinking about the projects I want to do in the house. Now that most of our big renovation work is complete, I’m focusing on the more enjoyable tasks of finessing rooms and deciding on decorating details. I’ve been very aware of the growth in popularity of tiles over the past year and how terracotta, marble and pattern effects have become as popular as classic limestone and slate. What’s even more interesting, is the way they’re being used; no longer just on flooring, splashbacks or in bathrooms, the latest trend is to make tiles a real standout feature in a room. On page 30, our Style & Interiors Editor, Rachel Edwards, suggests several innovative ways to use them; I’m particularly taken with the idea of creating a tiled fireplace that would be a real focal point in our living room.

If, like me, you’re in need of a bit of a pick-me-up at this time of year, I’d recommend turning to our Design Icons story on the classic Unikko print from Marimekko (page 39). This vibrant poppy pattern, first launched in 1964, can’t fail to lift the spirits. Available on fabric, tableware, cushions and even bathrobes, it’s a great way to add a pop of colour and feeling of joy. Or you could simply soak up the delights of growing narcissi on page 137, with expert horticulturist Sarah Raven. It’s a reassuring reminder that spring really is just around the corner!
