Spring to life

Get ready for a new start when winter steps aside for the big seasonal refresh. Here’s how to achieve a lighter, brighter, cleaner look for your interiors

GO SOFTLY

The easiest way to give your home an energising springtime re-set is to introduce softer, lighter colours, according to stylist Sally Cullen. Neutral sofas and armchairs can beautifully complement cushions in muted linens, swapping out winter’s opulent velvets. Maximise natural light by hanging sheer voiles, ensuring windows are clean inside and out, and replacing winter’s daylight bulbs with lower lumen ratings to provide a relaxing glow on brighter spring evenings. Another lovely springtime touch is to bring pretty blooms, plants and foliage indoors. Sally says natural elements are a great way to boost health and wellbeing: ‘From flowers and foliage foraged from the back garden to a monthly floral subscription, biophilic design – incorporating nature into everyday life – will bring the new season into your home.’ To really lift your living space, add spring fragrances through scented candles and diffusers or even grow spring bulbs such as hyacinth and daffodils in terracotta pots.

FINES SE YOUR FURNITURE

If you’re planning a furniture upgrade this spring, here’s a helpful way to start thinking about any major investments you might need to make. ‘Start by moving all the existing furniture out of the room so you can assess the space you’ve got,’ says Sally. ‘Use paper templates of the separate pieces in order to get a sense of where things could fit without physically having to keep moving everything around.’ Also, streamline your home accessories for spring. It’s definitely time to pack
