I have lived in several homes over the years and the design feature that’s always been at the top of my wishlist – and yours too, possibly – is plenty of light. A bright and airy space is energising and uplifting and never goes out of style. This issue is all about embracing light and welcoming in the sunshine – starting with our gorgeous colour story on page 19, which shows how to decorate with yellow, the sunniest and most cheerful of shades. This is also the time of year when we throw open the windows and make the most of natural daylight. Our feature ‘How To Let In The Light’, page 32, includes ideas for blinds, curtains and shutters that will help make your windows a star attraction while letting you control the light levels.

All five real-life homes, starting on page 60, are the epitome of light, airy and lovely to live in. These include a renovated former farmhouse in Scotland, a London townhouse, a family home in Essex and a cottage in Copenhagen. The Kent home of textile designer Margo Selby, with its double-height windows and creative use of colour, is a masterclass in breathing new life into a 1930s house. We’re sure you’ll love them all.

I fell instantly in love with the elegant garden on page 124 – an urban oasis that feels like an outdoor room with its laidback seating areas and stunning neutral colour palette. By the time you’ve enjoyed Arthur Parkinson’s guide to sweet peas on page 130, and the sunshine-filled Sardinian-inspired recipes on page 136, we promise you’ll be well and truly in the mood for summer!
