" BLENDING styles CREATES Balance"

HANNAH HAMPTON HAS COMBINED PERIOD ELEGANCE WITH STRIKING CONTEMPORARY DESIGN IN HER NEWLY RENOVATED LONDON HOME. HERE, SHE SHARES HER STYLE SECRETS

HOME NOTES

Hannah Hampton, an interior designer and founder of Ottosam Design, lives here with her husband Paul, who works in finance, and three girls, Sophia, 10, Amelie, eight, and Ottilie, six.

A six-bed, late Victorian house, near Wandsworth Common, London, bought in 2018.

1 “Learn the art of layering”

‘We were keen to achieve an industrial feel in the kitchen. We did this by leaving brickwork, structural beams and columns exposed, laying a polished concrete floor and fitting floor-to-ceiling Crittall windows and doors across the width of the property. We then added elegant features such as marble and panelling, along with natural elements such as the solid wood dining table, which contrast beautifully with these harder finishes.’

HARD WEARING

Polished concrete is a durable contemporary flooring that’s easy to clean and maintain

2 “Create a focal point with a huge island”

‘We wanted a classic but contemporary kitchen that suited our needs as a busy family of five, with a large, central marble island at the heart of the design. Bespoke cabinetry, painted in a rich black, runs along the back wall. A floating marble shelf provides a curated focal point.’

3“Soften an industrial scheme with feminine touches”

‘Within the large open-plan space, we created a stylish mini seating area with a contemporary gas burner. We added a tactile bouclé sofa, linen chair and soft furnishings in natural fibres and colours to soften the aesthetic and create a cosy area where we can unwind and enjoy views out across the garden.’

4“Update a room with internal glazing”

‘Previously the snug had no purpose but now it is one of the most used rooms in the house. The internal window brings lots of light into what was once a very dark space, and from a practical perspective means I can keep an eye on the children when I’m in the kitchen. The blue sofa and the bespoke joinery “disappear” into the dark blue walls, making the room feel smart yet cosy.’
