THE PROBLEM

THE SOLUTION

‘The bathroom is long and narrow with a window on the end wall. In the old layout you had to squeeze past the bath and basin to get to the loo and the shower was right next to the door as you opened it. Plus the fittings had been there for over 20 years. Our daughter, Victoria, is an interior designer and came up with the idea of getting rid of the bath and moving the shower into the window area. The glass shower door, which was made bespoke by Matki (matki.co.uk), forms a partition across the room, splitting it in half and making it feel more in proportion. We chose a neutral palette with accents of dark green to complement our rural surroundings, and brass fixtures. Putting the shower at the end so you can enjoy the view while showering was the best thing we did.’

‘To maximise the space, we went for a wet room-style shower. Ledges add extra storage and a place for finishing touches’ Zehnder Buckingham towel radiator in Antique Bronze, £1,893, Utopia Interiors. Basswood Venetian blind in Stone, from £78, SLX Blinds

FOCUS ON

Brass taps and shower fittings add character and a luxurious touch to any bathroom, but they need extra care to keep them looking their best

n Brushed- or aged-brass finishes are likely to be unlacquered pure brass. They will have colour variations, even from new, and will age over time, developing a unique patina as the brass oxidises.

n After each use, it’s important to rinse away any traces of toothpaste or soap. Always gently dry after with a clean microfibre cloth. Even with careful cleaning, water and finger marks are unavoidable but these will add character to the surfaces.

n Once a week, clean your brassware with a weak solution of soap and water if needed.
