1 CREATEA FOCAL POINT IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

Change up the look of your living room by hanging new artwork on the wall behind your sofa. Go for either a landscape design or two portrait shaped pieces of equal size side-by-side. Most people hang pictures too high; you shouldn’t have to strain your neck to see them. Aim to make the centre of the picture roughly five feet from the ground.

2 DECORATE IN SOOTHING TONES

Greys and whites can sometimes feel a little cold, but choosing to decorate in rich leather and tan tones will make any space beautifully warm and soft. A calm taupe on the walls works perfectly in homes both old and new, while furniture in a neutral leather upholstery with matching detailing on cupboard pulls makes the space feel grown up, with a touch of relaxed decadence.

3 FIND SPACE FOR A DRINKS STATION

A compact drinks trolley won’t take up much space in your living room and it’ll be a fun talking point when you’re entertaining at home. Choose a design with shelves so that you have plenty of space to store the essentials. Put heavier bottles and bulky mixers on the bottom shelf and store glasses and cocktail-making tools above for easy access when playing the mixologist for family and friends.

4 To add a pop of unexpected colour to your living room, paint the inside of a window frame or casing in a contrasting, vibrant shade.

5 HIGHLIGHT A SPECIAL FEATURE

A painted border will draw attention to period door frames and smart skirting boards. Start by measuring a border 8-10cm from the edge of the door and skirting. Next, use masking tape or Duck Tape to create a crisp, straight line. If your wall is painted in a colour, choose a deeper shade for the border so the door stands out even more.

6 RESTYLE YOUR SHELVES

If artwork hung on the wall feels a little too permanent for you, try creating a gallery wall using picture ledges instead. This way, you can have fun arranging and rearranging your framed prints, books and accessories as often as you like, playing with their positioning and adding new pieces whenever it suits. Paint the ledges the same colour as the wall behind so they don’t distract from the artwork displayed on them.

7 To make fragrant firelighters for winter, melt scented tea lights in cupcake cases then stick a pinecone on the top of the soft wax
