Today’s kitchens are so much more than just a place to cook. Within a heartbeat, we expect them to become dining spaces, home offices, family areas, laundry rooms, and so much more. And in order to keep up, kitchen design is moving at an equally fast pace. We asked three industry experts to share their insider secrets on what the designs of this year look like…

THE MULTIPURPOSE KITCHEN

‘The trend for kitchens as the hub of the home will be strengthened further in 2024, as they become truly multifaceted rooms,’ says Debra. ‘With advancements in technology and the option of customised cabinetry and personalised layouts, the desire and ability to create dream kitchens has never been greater.’ Francesca agrees: ‘Whether we want to incorporate seating to grab a coffee with friends, a home office for daytime working, or a home bar for drinks, the kitchen has to adapt to changing needs day and night.’ Katie adds, ‘Today’s kitchens are high-traffic areas, designed to be used frequently throughout the day, especially for those with smaller homes who need to maximise space.’

MAKE IT YOURS

‘Kitchens are personal and should be designed to suit the daily needs of the family or individual they’re meant for,’ says Katie. ‘As smart technology grows, we’ll see more appliances and systems becoming interconnected, voice or app controlled, making cooking and kitchen management more efficient,’ says Debra. ‘Yet simplicity is important, too,’ argues Francesca, ‘with spaces that are both beautiful and that really work. Don’t overcomplicate things; stick to the basics of good kitchen design.’ Katie adds, ‘Think about that growing list of tasks beyond food prep – durable and versatile worksurfaces are a must.’
