Big stick river float rig

An easy-to-control set-up that’s deadly for all manner of species

RIG SCHOOL

CONTROL really is everything when trotting a float down a river. Many anglers make the mistake of using too light a float that cannot be held back and slowed down to the right speed. Always remember that the water close to the riverbed will be flowing at half the speed of the surface, so to present a bait as naturally as possible it’s essential to slow the float’s passage down quite substantially.

This rig utilises a 4g float, with the bulk of the loading concentrated in a 3g olivette set about a metre from the hook. This gets the bait down quickly, helping it to avoid the attentions of any small fish up in the water.

The bulk of weight also makes it easier to hold the float back without the bait rising up off the bottom. Below the olivette, No8 shot give the bait a natural fall through the water. Using small shot also enables adjustment of the presentation to encourage more bites.

Expect quality roach, chub, bream and even barbel to fall for this set-up!
