Thank you for purchasing the latest issue of IYCF.

At last, the first few signs that spring isn’t far away are becoming ever more apparent each day. Daylight hours are increasing notably, the first snowdrops are out and the temperature has definitely started to creep up by a few welcome degrees.

Watching nature slowly reawaken after winter is one of my favourite times of the year and the transformations that take place at our favourite fishing venues can be quite marked over the coming weeks.

That said, it’s important to remember that while it may feel milder, the water temperatures will need more than just a couple of sunny days to really start to increase again.

I often see anglers make the mistake of automatically ramping up the quantities of bait they introduce, just because they might not need to wear their thermal winter coat any more.

It’s something that I’ve fallen foul of myself in the past and it can be the kiss of death when targeting fish that are still going to be fairly lethargic.

You’ll fare much better by continuing to err on the side of caution for a little while longer as far as loosefeeding is concerned. If the fish start to feed more confidently over the course of the session, then by all means start to put in a little more bait. But at the start of the day, it’s better to play it safe with a minimal outlay that isn’t going to fill the fish up too qui
