They’ve survived more trauma than most couples have to cope with in a lifetime, but sadly Walford lovebirds Zack and Whitney are seriously struggling to get their relationship over this latest bump in the road. Pregnant Whit’s fixation on fostering troubled schoolgirl Britney has caused a rift with partner Zack, who fears that taking in the tearaway could jeopardise the mum-to-be’s wellbeing, as well as their baby’s.
Still stung from the tragic loss of baby Peach last year, protective Zack wants to focus on his family’s future, which definitely doesn’t include Britney. With Whitney set to leave the Square in the coming months, we ask EastEnder James Farrar if this is the beginning of the end for his alter ego Zack’s doomed romance…
Hi, James! What was it like to be part of Bianca’s return recently?
It’s probably up there as one of my best weeks on EastEnders! It was great to go on location with an incredible cast and crew, who had to have a lot of respect for the subject matter. When Patsy Palmer [aka Bianca] walks on to a set, she creates a certain energy, and it was a joy to work with her. We had the best time ever.
How is Zack feeling after trying to kiss Lauren?
Zack has a real sense of guilt and still doesn’t know why it happened. I think he felt seen by Lauren because she empathised with him over the Britney situation, plus there’s also a definite physical attraction there. Zack has deep-rooted issues with people not showing him the love he thinks he might deserve. Deep down, he’s worried Whitney has chosen a different life with Britney to the one they had planned.
Is he relieved Lauren has agreed to keep quiet?
Yes, but he’s still on eggshells around her. Zack really does have a soft spot for Lauren. When someone’s let you off the hook like that it makes you trust them even more, so Lauren becomes a better friend to him. In my opinion, what Zack did is pretty unforgivable, though he feels he was driven by Whitney’s behaviour and the choices she’s making about Britney.
Whitney’s on her way home – has Zack missed her?
He wants her home so they can start their life together with their baby. Zack is the type of person to paper over cracks – he just wants to make things right, and hopes he can put everything they argued about behind him so they can move forward as a family.
