Hollyoaks has kicked off a long-running storyline involving Darren’s teenage twins, JJ and Frankie, set to highlight the subject of sibling sexual abuse.
Viewers have already seen disturbing scenes of JJ entering his sister’s bedroom and trying to pull her in for a kiss, before being startled by noise elsewhere in the house. It’s clear the abuse has been going on since the twins were younger, and this latest incident left Frankie so distressed that she hit the bottle, resulting in her being hospitalised.
Hollyoaks is working closely with SARSAS – a charity offering support to people affected by sexual abuse – who have advised on the storyline throughout the writing process, and briefed newcomers Isabelle Smith and Ryan Mulvey on their portrayals of Frankie and JJ.
“Sibling sexual abuse is a subject matter that merits attention and recognition,” says Hollyoaks executive producer Hannah Cheers. “It’s one of the most infrequently disclosed forms of sexual abuse, yet the statistics are startling. Hollyoaks is shining a light on this issue for the first time in a long-term soap storyline because we need to get this conversation started among our multigenerational audience.”
The story will unfold over the coming months – but how long will it be before Darren and Nancy discover the horror under their own roof?
