Emmerdale viewers are cordially invited to the nuptials of Matty Barton and Amy Wyatt this week – or at least they would be, if the bride’s scatty mum Kerry had actually bothered to pay the bill for the fancy wedding venue! After Kerry lets her daughter down once again, Amy and Matty’s big day is thankfully saved at the eleventh hour, and the couple finally arrive at Home Farm ready to say their vows and become husband and wife.
It wouldn’t be a proper soap wedding without a big drama though, would it? And as we catch up with Emmerdale stars Ash Palmisciano and Natalie Ann Jamieson, who play the happy couple, it’s clear that they’re over the moon that their characters are finally getting their special day…
Hi both! What were your reactions when you found out you’d be having a soap wedding?
Natalie Just very excited! We had quite a lot of input into it, in terms of how our characters might dress, and the bosses asked us loads of questions. It made it feel quite special – I know it’s not a real wedding, but it felt like it!
Ash I was over the moon, because this has been a long time in the making. But also we get on really well as friends outside of work, so it’s been really lovely working together. Then to have a soap wedding is the icing on the cake – as an actor growing up watching soaps, a soap wedding is like a Top Trumps moment, isn’t it? Everyone wants one, so it’s really exciting.
Natalie We do love working together. Ash is very funny, and like a breath of fresh air – he’s always happy, and just a lovely person to be around.
It’s also an extra-special moment as it’s Emmerdale’s first transgender wedding – how do you feel to be involved in that?
