THE BIG interview

CORONATION STREET | ITV1 MONDAY

JACK CARROLL SHARES HIS FAVOURITE THEORIES AROUND THE CORRIE MYSTERY THAT HAS TAKEN THE NATION BY STORM…

Do you have a ‘Roy Cropper is innocent’ T-shirt?” is genuinely the first question we put to Corrie star Jack Carroll, who plays Bobby, as he joins us for a chat while in the thick of the soap campaign that has gripped the nation.

Jack’s answer is a steadfast “Yes!” of course, though it was Bobby’s suspicions of Roy that kicked off the police investigation into Lauren’s murder in the first place. And while he frantically tries to back pedal in the coming days – after going so far as to falsify a witness statement in the hope it will clear Roy’s name – star Jack worries that the damage has already been done…

Hello, Jack! How does it feel to be at the heart of the Street’s biggest story?

The buzz surrounding Lauren’s murder investigation and Roy’s campaign has so far been amazing! I started hearing rumblings about the story on about my third week of being here. It was great in terms of getting to grips with how the show worked, as I didn’t really have time to think about it. It helped me relax and see off any early nerves and jitters!

False account: Bobby’s lies could draw him further in
The truth: Lauren’s friends are determined to get to the bottom of her disapperance

Have you been following any of the fan theories online about what’s happened to Lauren and who’s behind it?

I have indeed! I love the fact that there are so many different theories and that all the characters can be implicated – including Bobby. Among some of the brilliantly outlandish ideas is the notion that he might have something to do with it, which is fun! And I suppose now he’s going to become part of the criminal investigation for giving a false statement…

Lost love: There could have been romance with Lauren

Yes, will Bobby’s effort to save Roy by lying to the police land him in big trouble?

That is usually what happens in these situations, and certainly DS Swain isn’t the sort of character that you want to be on the wrong side of – especially when she has a bee in her bonnet! For Bobby’s part, it was a naive and immature attempt to right a wrong for someone who he’s subsequently found out is a nice bloke. But, unfortunately, what he’s done is make things 10 times worse.

Do you find it easy to keep secrets, and how are you coping with this one?

If I’m in a pub, even before they’ve poured my drink, they’re asking me what’s happened to Lauren! My standard answer is that you’ll have to keep watching, which is probably quite boring, but I don’t want the story to be spoiled!

If Lauren and Bobby had longer together, might they have coupled up romantically?
