Denny walks back into Paul’s life – but is he a changed man?

There’s a shock in store for dying Paul this week – when his estranged dad Denny rocks up unannounced!

Having heard his son on a local radio show, Denny is stunned to find out about Paul’s motor neurone disease and wants to make amends with his son before it’s too late. But given Denny’s violent past, will Paul welcome him with open arms? Corrie star Peter Ash, who plays Paul, talks us through an action-packed week for his character…

Hi Peter! The week starts with Paul appearing on Amy’s new radio show – how does that go?

Bernie sets it up because she thinks it will lift Paul’s spirits. But on the way to the interview, he has a problem ordering a taxi that will fit his wheelchair, and the driver’s a bit of an idiot. So he has that on his mind when he’s doing the interview, and he gets a bit passionate about the way disabled people are treated. Then Paul drops a swear word live on the radio!

What does that have to do with Paul’s dad arriving?

It’s because of that radio interview that Denny ends up getting in touch. He arrives unexpectedly at the flat, which takes Paul totally by surprise. I think if that had happened a couple of years ago, before the MND diagnosis, Paul would have told his dad to do one, as he wasn’t a nice person. But now Paul’s dying, he has a different outlook on life.

How does Paul react to his dad wanting to make amends after all these years?

He decides to give his dad a chance, and they go out for a drink to the Rovers. They actually get on all right because Denny treats Paul like a normal person; Paul often gets upset with Billy treating him like a patient, which is understandable. So it’s just nice to have someone treating him like normal for an evening.
