Billy and Dawn had noticed unexplained bruises on baby Evan

Billy and Dawn face their worst nightmare this week, as poorly baby Evan is rushed to hospital. After several tests on his mysterious symptoms, the parents are given the tragic news that he has leukaemia.

Once Dawn takes Evan to A&E, she’s stunned when a paediatrician reveals he’s much sicker than the worried mum first thought. Several tests later, the bone marrow biopsy results reveal the news that the terrified parents were dreading, and the entire family are left reeling… “The news comes as a curveball,” admits Olivia Bromley, who plays anguished mum Dawn. “They go back into hospital and it turns out Evan has leukaemia.

Out of nowhere, everything changes. They just have to deal with it.”

Worrying symptoms

Aside from trouble breastfeeding when Evan was born, Dawn’s had no problems with her little boy’s health – until now. When she spots a bruise on his leg, her first worry is that doctors might think she’s been hurting him.

“Billy and Dawn start noticing Evan has bruises on him, and it’s unexpected because he’s not fallen,” explains Olivia. “They’re very worried social services will have the wrong impression because as a couple they deal with them a lot – but it turns out one of the symptoms of leukaemia is lots of bruising…”

After some advice on the phone from Liam, who recommends going straight to A&E, Dawn takes Evan to hospital where he’s quickly seen by a paediatrician. When his bloods are taken, Billy and Dawn wait anxiously for the results, only to be delivered a crushing blow once the doctor returns and tells them their son is very sick.

Waiting game

With the blood test results raising concerns, the paediatrician requests an urgent bone marrow biopsy as Evan has low haemoglobin and platelet levels. As the poor parents wait for further investigations to be performed on their boy, their close-knit family is shaken to the core.
