“Remember, Ruby nearly lost her son Nicky recently, so seeing a parent going through the same terrible nightmare cuts her deep,” reveals our Emmerdale insider. “Ruby is convinced that her hit and run on Ethan is to blame for his death – after all, what else could have been the reason for his sudden collapse? She gets to the point where she can no longer deal with the guilt…”
Ruby’s big decision comes after Manpreet, struggling with Charles’ grief, confides in her that the vicar isn’t coping with his son’s death. Ruby is riddled with guilt to hear this; while she desperately wanted to punish Ethan for leaving Nicky for dead following their car crash, she didn’t mean to kill him. And she certainly didn’t mean to cause so much pain to Charles and the rest of his family.
Overwhelmed by her feelings, Ruby finds herself heading to the church. Charles then arrives to discover her there and Ruby offers him comfort, reaching her hand towards his, a gesture which he gratefully accepts. But little does he know that the touching moment is as affecting for her as it is for him…
