YOU’LL NEED iPad, iPhone or iPod touch

Genius tip!

Guided Access limits your device to a single app. If you want more flexibility, use Screen Time to enable or limit multiple apps instead.

The thing about having personal devices such as iPads and iPhones is that you don’t necessarily want other people to access everything that’s on them.

For example, you might want party guests to be able to queue up songs without getting into your other apps, or you might want to limit a child’s usage to a single child-friendly app, or you might want house guests to be able to use Safari without having a look at When someone triple-clicks the Sleep/Wake button, they won’t be able to end the session without the passcode. any of your personal data or documents. That’s where Guided Access comes in. It locks down your device to a single app, and it can also limit what happens in that app.

Double benefits

When Guided Access is on, the person using your device can’t switch apps or go to the Home Screen. You can set additional limits too, such as disabling some on-screen buttons or icons or setting a time limit after which the device shuts down. You can also use Guided Access to disable keyboard input.

We’ve also heard of Guided Access being used in an alternative way, as a way to reduce distractions. With Guided Access on in an app such as Pages or Books, the lure of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is far easier to resist.

In this guide, you’ll discover how to enable Guided Access on any iOS or iPadOS device, which limits you can then enforce, and how you can use it to stop snoops, keep kids ‘contained’ in a single app or just stop yourself wasting time doomscrolling instead of actually getting on with your work!

HOW TO Turn on Guided Access

Guided Access is one of many useful features in your device’s Accessibility screen, which you’ll find by going to Settings > Accessibility. If Guided Access isn’t already enabled, you’ll need to switch it on here.

If you have Touch ID, you can use it to quickly disable the Guided Access feature. You can toggle that on in Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access > Passcode Settings, where you can also create a default passcode.
