Whether you’re upgrading from Apple or switching from Android, moving on is easy

The excellent SongShift app can export your existing streaming playlists to Apple Music.

Upgrading from Apple to Apple is really easy – especially if you use iCloud. Apple has made it remarkably simple to migrate all your data, apps and preferences from one device to another.

If you’re moving from Android, you’ll find that all the big name apps are available for iOS and iPadOS too: Google’s many apps from Google Photos to Google Maps are in the App Store, and so are all the big-name third-party apps for music streaming, TV, messaging and so on. In many cases that means it’s just a matter of installing the appropriate app and logging in with your username and password, for example by logging into Google Photos, WhatsApp or Spotify.

The key apps are all present, but if you find that there’s an app you really like and it’s not in the App Store then, unfortunately, you’re out of luck: unlike Android, where you can ‘sideload’ apps from sources other than the Google Play Store, Apple won’t let you install any apps from anywhere else. If Apple doesn’t approve it you can’t have it.

If you want to migrate from Google services to Apple ones, that’s best done on a Mac with Android File Transfer. For example, to move your photos from your Android library to your Apple one, use the app and navigate to DCIM > Camera on your device and drag the photos and videos you want to a folder on your computer. You can then add those photos to your Photos Library and it’ll sync with your devices. It’s the same with other content such as ePub books and PDFs.
