Forget what you think you know about pattern – these spaces will open your mind to a world of decor possibilities
SAME SAME
If you want pattern to blend into your decor yet still make a striking statement, embrace one colour and layer patterns in that feature shade. In this sitting room, retro furniture and accessories in a sunny yellow create an uplifting scheme against the wiggly wallpaper. RUN WILD
For a good dose of dynamism, Mary Katrantzou’s loose and whimsical rug design sharply contrasts with the graphic artwork on the wall, bringing life andmovementtothistraditional sitting room. ‘By drawing inspiration from our archival prints, our intention is to create beautiful rugs that resemble works of art and permeate a sense of timelessness in a space,’ says Mary. CHECK MATE
Even a bold pattern can create a solid base for your interior. A graphic rug, such as this checked dhurrie, grounds the softly painted room and shows that a strong motif needn’t overpower a space. Checkerboard King hand-woven hemp dhurrie, from £980, Vanderhurd x 8 Holland Street. Checker Checker fabric in Viola, £340m, Vanderhurd.
FLOOR SHOW
As this fabulous project proves, pattern doesn’t always have to go on the walls. Here, multicoloured floor tiles tessellate towards the staircase while the block-pattern runner further elevates the mood. ‘The stair runner is our bespoke design. It runs from the ground floor hallway right up to a bedroom,’ says Katie Glaister of K&H Design. ‘This runner brings together all the colours of the home – and there are many – while the confetti-like custom floor tiles were sourced from London Mosaic.’
SURPRISE SURPRISE
Sure, pattern can be a bit showy – but it can also be your best-kept secret when used in unexpected ways in cabinets, closets and wardrobes. ‘For this custom-designed guest boudoir wardrobe, we decided to use an art deco-inspired wallpaper as a surprise for visitors when they open the doors,’ says Anna Burles of interior design studio Run For The Hills. ‘The timber and rattan doors are the perfect peaceful foil for the drama unfolded on the reveal.’ Jada wallpaper, £120 a roll, Anna Hayman Designs.
