The paragon of good taste

THE SPACE WHERE YOU WINE AND DINE NEEDS TO HAVE AMBIENCE, BUT IN ADDITION TO STYLE THERE ARE A FEW PRACTICALITIES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER

‘Dining room colours set the stage for laughter, connection and even romance. So choose tones that flatter the skin tone or feel comfortable and rich. I find that warm, rosy hues are amazing, as they make everyone look healthier.’

Jennifer Morris, founder of JMorris Design

‘Furniture should have enough space for people to pass comfortably behind someone who is seated at the table. A rule of thumb is no less than 36-42 inches between the table and the wall or sideboard.’

Reena Sotropa, founder of Reena Sotropa In House Design Group

‘Surfboard-shaped dining tables have been popular for some time now. I think we’re all used to seeing rectangular pieces but given how dining rooms aren’t closed-off spaces any more, the need is for tables that make it easy to get around in the space. The rounded corners create less of a visual block.’

SET THE SCENE

Makeyourdiningroomashowcaseforallthingsbeautiful and a place for pause. After all, this is where you spend a significant amount of time hosting friends and family. Fill it with eye-catching lighting fixtures, art, decorative items and the most comfortable seats.

INNOVATIVE THINKING

Be inventive when it comes to creating a gorgeous dining area. ‘This room, which is octagonal in shape, was designed as a place for connection for a modern family,’ says Jon de la Cruz, founder of de la Cruz Interior Design. ‘Whether dining, playing games or enjoying an after dinner nightcap, I wanted to challenge the idea of a dining space, while keeping its quiet yet luxurious aesthetic.’

COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL

A statement table and chairs with a slim profile will make the most of the space available. ‘We chose these minimalist chairs in cane, along with a slim dining table, for this apartment,’ says Noorein Kapoor, founder of Noorein Kapoor Design Studio. ‘The cane chairs give the illusion of extra room. Narrow furniture legs help keep this segment of the house feeling open and relaxed.’
