Interior designer Marissa Corvino was always going to have a sophisticated home, but the way she’s made it kid-friendly is just genius

Marissa chose durable performance fabrics with a stain-retardant that would hold up to daily life with three kids and a dog. Concealed storage in the alcoves hides clutter.
When she discovered this townhouse in Hoboken, New Jersey – just across the Hudson R iver from Manhattan – Marissa Corvino immediately knew it was perfect for her family. ‘We wanted to be near a large city but with more tranquil surroundings,’ she remembers. ‘Hoboken is filled with tree-lined streets and has a vibrant sense of community.’
In addition to the charming surroundings, Marissa, who is the founder and principal of Corvino Design, also spotted the potential of the house itself, which had retained historical details despite undergoing some damage. ‘I saw it as an opportunity to start from scratch and create a fresh modern take on a brow nstone,’ she says. ‘But we kept the original exterior stoop railings so the house was rooted in its neighbourhood.’
A long with her husband, Frank, Marissa strove to design a space that they could grow into. ‘This renovation became very personal,’ she says. ‘I pictured my family in ever y detail and wanted them to be in awe of the final result. Our home had to feel elevated but approachable at the same time.’
