MOST OF US probably stick to the tried–and–tested web browsers, be that Safari, Chrome or Firefox. But venture outside of the box and you can find some really interesting alternative apps that are pushing the boundaries of what you can expect to find when you surf the web.

One such browser is Arc, an app that rips up the web browser rule book in a host of different ways, with its key aim being to save you time. It rethinks tabs, lets you save live widgets to your own mood boards, and even enables you to redesign existing web pages. There are built–in notes, a pop–out video player, and tabs are archived automatically (after a time you set) to avoid tab overload. It’s a new way to browse, and it works superbly.

If you’re stuck in web–based purgatory and want something that will rejig your experience, the Arc browser is well worth a try. Here, we’ll take you through all the key features that help it stand out. Who knows, it could soon become your main browser of choice.

HOW TO Get to know the Arc web browser

Your tabs live in the left sidebar. Pinned tabs are at the top, and unpinned tabs are below. Drag an unpinned tab into the pinned section to stick it in place, or move it into the favorites area to give it a larger icon.

Arc uses a Spotlight–like search bar, which is summoned by pressing Cmd+T. This allows you to open new tabs, tweak the app’s settings, view your extensions, and much more. It’s an all–in–one command bar for Arc.

With Spaces, you can separate tabs for different purposes, like with Safari’s Tab Groups. Click the “+” in the bottom–left, then click New Space. Give that space a name, assign a profile, and pick a theme, then click Create Space.

Each space has its own pinned and open tabs, which is great for organization (favorites persist across spaces). Change spaces with the icons in Arc’s bottom–left corner, or swipe on your trackpad inside the tab sidebar.

To use different logins, cookies and history in different spaces, experiment with profiles. Click Spaces > Change Profile > New Profile to add one. You can now keep your work and personal logins in se
