NOTES IS A great app, but it’s very easy to lose your work amid a plethora of lists, ramblings and jotted half–ideas. You can search for notes, yes, but what if you can’t remember exactly what you need? The answer is to use tags (#) and Smart Folders. In combination, these tools make finding and organizing your notes a cinch. In fact, Smart Folders do all the organizing for you, shouldering the burden so you don’t have to.

A tag can be added anywhere in a note, including its title. You can’t add spaces to a note’s tag name, but it can have hyphens, numbers and underscores. Once you’ve added some tags, you can then search by those tags to find similar notes and group them together.

SMART SORTING

Another way to sort your notes is by using Smart Folders. Each Smart Folder is essentially a set of filters: you can create a Smart Folder that contains all notes bearing a certain tag, for instance. Smart Folders work alongside your regular folders — adding a note to a Smart Folder doesn’t remove it from its original location —with the added benefit that all the sorting is done automatically. That means you don’t have to constantly maintain folders anymore, as Notes does it for you.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to add tags and create Smart Folders. Once done, you shouldn’t have to worry about managing a muddle of myriad notes ever again.

HOW TO Use tags and Smart Folders in Notes

In a note, type a hashtag (#), enter the name of your tag, then type a space. Tags appear in different colors to regular note text. Once you’ve added some tags, you’ll see suggestions every time you go to add a new one.

You can add tags to several notes at once. Go to a folder of notes, tap “…” then pick Select Notes. Tap all the notes you want to include, then tap Tags at the bottom of the screen. Select the tags you want to add, then tap Done.
