Meditation in motion

1 min read

Walking is not only a joint-protecting way to boost your cardio fitness, but a free and easy mood-enhancer. Herbert Benson, author of The Relaxation Response, suggests walking is the perfect route to calm, particularly if you find it difficult to sit still for any length of time. Here’s how to maximise the meditative benefits of your next walk…

HONE IN

Much as following the breath does in yoga, keeping your focus on walking technique can help you to still your mind and be present in the moment. Pay attention to your cadence, stride length, foot strike and arm swing.

STAND TALL

Project confidence when you walk – forced or otherwise – and before long it will rub off on your mood. Stand tall, head held high, shoulders back and chest open.

VISUALISE

Try to imagine any hills on your route as problems or challenges you face in life. Pause at the bottom, take a few deep breaths, then confidently stride up, conquering it as you should with all the obstacles life, love and work will throw at you – one step at a time.
