Java vs bedrock – which is better?

7 min read

If you’re a reader of Minecraft World, you probably know that there are two versions of Minecraft - Java and Bedrock - each with its own unique features and gameplay. But you also probably wonder - which is better?!

Java Edition

To try and settle the question once and for all, we’ll compare these two versions to determine which – if either - is superior. So, whether you’re a seasoned Minecraft pro or just starting out, read on to find out which version of Minecraft is right for you!

THE TWO VERSIONS

First off, we should explain the basic difference between these two editions for anyone who doesn’t know.

The JAVA EDITION of Minecraft is the original and most well-known version of the game. It has been in continuous development since the game’s initial release in 2011, and is known for its extensive modding community, which allows players to customise the game with mods and add-ons, adding new features and gameplay mechanics. Java Edition also has a large multiplayer community, where players can join servers and play with others from around the world. If you’re playing the Java Edition, you will see the words ‘Java Edition’ on the title screen.

The BEDROCK EDITION is a newer version, designed to be played on multiple platforms. As well as Windows, it is available on the Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. This version of Minecraft also has its own unique features, such as the ability to purchase and download add-ons directly from the in-game marketplace, making it easier for players to customise their experience. If you’re playing the Bedrock Edition, the title screen will just say ‘Minecraft’.

GRAPHICS

When it comes to graphics, both Java and Bedrock Editions of Minecraft are almost identical when you fire them up, although there are key differences which aren’t necessarily visible in screenshots!

The Java Edition, for instance, has a significant advantage in that it is designed to work with high-end PC hardware, which means it can take advantage of graphical performance unavailable on Bedrock, which is designed to work on a wider variety of systems and crucially engineered for less powerful hardware such as tablets and mobile phones.

That said, the Bedrock Edition has more versatile performance and a smoother frame rate in many cases, especially if you have a mid-range device. It also has quicker load times compared to the Java Edition, though it also has more ‘pop-in’ – instances where things (such as mobs) appear suddenly in the world rather than load before you get close.
