There are few better things to find in Minecraft than a chest packed full of free loot and rare resources. If you’re keen to get your hands on the good stuff, here are some great places to look...

It’s called a bonus chest for good reason

There’s an old saying that the best things in life are free, and that certainly rings true in Minecraft. Why spends hours mining for resources to craft a single item, when you can find chests filled with free stuff scattered all over the place? Not that finding them doesn’t come without its problems, not least the fact that the game world is MASSIVE, and that some of the best rewards are often in some very well-protected places.

To help you find a few hidden treasures, here are some of the best places to go looking for free resources – from the everyday essentials to some of the rarer items you’ll need to progress deeper into the game with. Inside, you’ll find some basics to help get you started, with maybe one or two tools to help you get mining. Along with a few food items to keep your health up for those early days, you might also find some saplings which can be planted for a sustainable wood supply if there aren’t many trees around. Plus, you’ll be able to pick up some ready-made torches (with more placed around the chest you can mine), so you don’t have to worry about spending those first few nights in the dark!

As part of your general exploration, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for any nearby villages. We’ll leave you to weigh up the pros and cons of stealing from strangers, but they’re home to lots of handy resources. There’s also the added bonus of maybe finding a spare bed for the night, or at least plenty of places to take shelter from the mobs if the sun’s going down.

In most villages, you’ll find plenty of crops for a quick snack (or to get your own farm started). You may also find chests inside the homes, with the contents often linked to the villagers’ profession – including nearby bookshelves if there’s a librarian
