ON-TREND FACE VASE

Upcycle any flat-sided spirits bottle to make this talking-point vase. Give the bottle a good wash out and, once dry, spray evenly with sandstone-effect spray paint. The easiest way to do this is with the bottle upside down on a bamboo cane, so you don’t get sprayed too! A few thin coats give the best finish and avoids drip marks.

When dry, lightly draw on the face using a pencil, aiming for a fluid continuous line, then go over the lines using a fine-tipped black permanent marker.

Textured weaves are a huge trend this summer and it takes minutes to add a wrap of cane wicker to a straight-sided glass tumbler or cylindrical glass vase for serious boho vibes. Simply cut the wicker sheet to size, snip and fray edges for laidback charm, and secure to the glass using a hot glue gun.

If you love it and want to make more, you’ll find cheap-as-chips cylindrical glass vases at therange.co.uk (from £6/40cm vase) and ikea.com (£12/3).

WHAT IT COST

✽ Wicker: Cane Wicker, Natural Woven Sheet, £16.99/40x 50cm ritohobby.co.uk

✽ Hot glue gun: Black Mini, £5 hobbycraft.co.uk TOTAL: £21.99

TIP Use S-hooks to hang these cuties from a fence or pergola

TIP The wicker sheet is big enough to make a few matching vases – make a co-ord candle holder too

SUSPENDED SASH-CORD JARS

Reclaim a selection of jars and bottles from the recycling to make this mismatched collection of mini flower vases. Vessels with narrow necks work best for this make – pop in the dishwasher for a thorough clean.

Once dry, cut a length of soft sash cord and wrap three or four times around the bottle or jar neck, securing with a hot glue gun, then tie in a chunky knot. Tie a loop in the other loose end of the cord for hanging. Glue on more cord at the base, if you like.

These vases also look great with grass stems and blooms such as statice and sea lavender that’ll dry in place with no water, so you can make them a permanent piece of patio decor.
