MAKE LIFE LOVELY
RUBY ROSEHIPS
These bright red jewels that adorn hedgerows and dormant rose bushes are like gleaming rubies in the November gloom. Not just bold and bulbous, wild rose hips are edible, rich in vitamin C and famed for their anti-inflammatory qualities. They look fab too: snip bunches and pop in a jam jar with seedheads, grasses and anything else you’ve foraged for a carefree autumnal posy.
Low glow
Snuggling up and hunkering down outside can be more satisfying than it is indoors at this time of year, as long as you encompass all the right components. A fire for heat, light, sound and ambience; cushions and throws for warmth; and texture too. But don’t forget the magic ingredient – candlelight. A glut of lanterns dotted about at floor or coffee-table level will transform chilly to charming. Adlestrop Lantern (top left), from £22 each gardentrading.co.uk

WHAT TO PLANT NOW!
Quince
Quince trees are invariably small in stature so they suit pint-sized plots, but they have deep roots so you’re best to plant directly in the ground. ‘Vranja’ (from £26.99/ bareroot, ashridgetrees.co.uk) is easy to grow, producing a healthy bounty of aromatic quince without needing much attention – just a sunny spot and decent drainage. You can make quince crumble or jelly if you like, but the curious shapes, golden skins and fragrant scent on the branches are joyful enough.
