Selina’s garden style modern cosy

Stylist & book author SELINA LAKE shares her on-trend styling ideas & glorious garden buys

Hello 2024! More often than not in January, we’re at the mercy of the weather but I’m itching to get outside for some fresh air, and to see if there’s anything new growing in the garden. On those days when it’s cool but bright, I head out the back door wrapped up in something cosy and, once I feel the warmth of the winter sun, I’m inspired to stay out awhile. I’m often surprised that it’s only the thought of going outside that’s chilly – in the garden, it feels fine!

And this is where this trend works a treat. The Modern Cosy style is all about layering, textures and a considered colour palette to give the perception of warmth. To create the cosy, I combine rich snug tones such as browns, deep reds, terracotta and earthy greens. And I’m drawn to furniture and accessories with interesting textures such as worn wood, wool blankets, terracotta and stoneware ceramics, along with a mass of twinkling lights and candles for a lovely glow.

The modern element is met by a touch of minimalism – sticking closely to the considered colour palette and limiting the number of items grouped together. Too many things in different styles and colourways will look cluttered rather than modern! And don’t think that modern has to mean ‘new’. For me, something timeless can be modern, looking fresh long after it first appeared.

Move a bistro set with cushions to a spot that enjoys the sun at whatever time of day you’re likely to have a moment to spare. Or add textiles and twinkling lights to your patio sofa. However you bring Modern Cosy to your garden, I wish you a warm and snug time. And a very happy New Year!

Love winter living

An outdoor living space isn’t just for summer! On a dry-weather day, dig your cushions out from their winter storage, string up some pretty lights, light the lanterns, spark up the firepit and turn a dark afternoon into a delight. Maluku Modular Sofa in teak, from £475 teakunique.co.uk
