JULIAN SINGLETON took this shot of his Axopar 28 on the way back to Port Adriano, Mallorca, after a morning’s wakeboarding. “I’d recently bought a DJI Mavic Mini 2 drone and was playing with it to see what sort of photos we could get.” Pretty good ones!

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

I thought the letter from Guy Chenevix- Trench in the April issue made a valid suggestion regarding a potential feature on trailerable boats.

Trailerable boats are a great way of introducing people to our sport as well as giving them the opportunity to get a taste of a wide variety of cruising areas. The Western Isles of Scotland, Milford Haven, the creeks of Essex or even the Morbihan in France can all be done on a sensible budget with a trailerable boat.

Despite now boating in a Broom 41, my grown-up children and I still have great memories of trailing a 20ft boat to La Trinité, using it as a caravan parked up in the Aire de Repos in France on the way there and back. So come on Hugo, encourage more people to start boating with an article on trailerable boats. Keith Wheeler Fair point, it’s how I started boating and I’m sure plenty of others did too. I’ll have a think about how best to approach it and come up with a plan. Hugo

TRAILER TRUTHS

I saw your response in last month’s letters page about maximum trailer sizes for towing boats on the road and thought it would be helpful to clarify a few points on the subject.

The maximum legal trailer length of 7m is technically correct but this measurement does not include the drawbar, coupling or A-frame, so our largest road legal trailers actually have an overall length of 9.75m, with the A-frame being circa 3.75m of this length. This trailer would typically take a boat with a bow eye-to-transom length of around 8.6m. A rear overhang of up to 2m is also allowed – if clearly visible.

The maximum trailer width of 2.55m is also correct but the load itself can be 2.9m wide before additional measures have to be considered.

For licences issued before January 1997, you are usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight of up to 8,250kg. For licences issued after that, the maximum towable weight (boat and trailer) is 3,500kg.
