CONFIDENCE BOOSTER

I just wanted to thank John Brennan for his honest, open and encouraging article about cruising out of sight of land (Over the Horizon, MBY May 2023).

Like him, I’ve owned a boat for years that could happily cope with offshore passages, but even though I’ve dreamed of using its full potential to cross the Channel and explore Europe, I’ve never yet plucked up the courage to do so.

There is something about losing sight of land that just feels a little too scary.

However, having read John’s article about how he overcame his own concerns only to discover that the reality of crossing the horizon is nothing like as bad as the fear of it, I am determined to take the plunge this year. I am not sure which I admire more – his ability to overcome his worries or his willingness to write about them in a boat magazine. Either way it has inspired me to grasp the nettle and give it a go.

I couldn’t agree more and I have no doubt that there are hundreds of other boat owners who feel exactly the same way. If his article helps to convince even a handful of them to use more of their boats’ potential, it is a job well done.

GREEK CHARTERS

My wife and I are looking to charter a motor cruiser for cove-hopping in Greece. I have an ICC. When I Google for charters there are a lot of companies to choose from but it is hard to differentiate the good from the bad.

Are you able to recommend any charter companies who provide safe and reliable boats or do you have any advice on how or where to look for such companies?

Glen Bertram

The only experience I have of chartering in Greece is through The Moorings. They run a very slick operation with good service and well maintained boats. However, the only motor boats they do are powercats, which are ideal for families but may not be so well suited for the two of you. Let’s throw it open to the readers and see if they have any personal recommendations for you.
