JOHN McGUINNESS
TT Legend John McGuinness MBE in MCN every week
Seeing Tommy and Honda leading the championship means there are a few people lunching on their words and trying to gulp down their humble pie at the minute… and to be fair, I’m one of them!
They had a steady start, but now, it’s just ‘wow’.
I was at Knockhill and it was a very, very mature and savvy ride from Tommy and as we’ve said many times before – champions don’t fall off. In one of the practice sessions he did over 50 laps; he’d obviously been reading the weather and knew Sunday was going to be tricky so he made sure he had a good package for the wet. But then he put it on pole and was dominant in race one in the dry.
He’s got a lot of belief. A lot of belief in himself, which is great and also belief in the bike. He knows what he wants and he’s getting what he wants, but he’s also a racer: a Sunday man and he’s not scared of a bit of combat, which you can’t be if you want to win the BSB championship.
A few other riders have changed teams this year, but Tommy has dealt with it the best. He’s had to take a few things on the chin, but he’s done the work.
