Oxenhope: the best of God’s Own County

CLAIFE HEIGHTS, LAKE DISTRICT 12.1km (7.5 miles)

Ring in the Lake District has a reputation for involving long hike-a-bikes and white-knuckle descents but, slap bang in the middle of the fells, Claife Heights offers plenty of Cumbrian charm without too much effort. So if you’re looking to ride your mountain bike in – but not up – the mountains, this is the route for you. Starting on the edge of Lake Windermere, you quickly enter the woodland that makes up the Heights before undulating across the tops. Even seasoned riders will appreciate the mellow nature of the terrain and the chance to kick back and take in the views. GPS download bit.ly/ClaifeHeights

This route takes you under the highest peak in the Clwydian range, Moel Famau, across open expanses and along forest roads. At just over 19km, it packs enough distance to feel like a worthwhile adventure without being a slog. GPS download bit.ly/Clwydian

With a short but sharp climb, some beautiful winding moorland singletrack and a challenging descent or two; if you’re looking for your first ride outside of a trail centre, this loop is for you. In fact, with so many different trail types along the way, consider this route Yorkshire in miniature. If you can manage this ride you’re set to ride anywhere in God’s Own County. For the most part you’ll be riding on well-draining rock, making this a good all-weather route – agood job as H
