Have you ever dreamt of being a professional rider? Personally, I’ve always been too aware of my own limitations – lack of fitness, ropey hand-eye coordination – to think I had a chance. Just as my complete absence of talent on the guitar put an end to my rockstar fantasies. Nevertheless, the idea of ‘free’ bikes (which don’t have to be sent back after testing), jetsetting to exotic locations to ride and basking in the adulation of adoring fans (no Mum, you don’t count...) does appeal. So, this issue we’re taking a look at the reality of life as a pro, with help from the likes of Brendan Fairclough (Scott), Hattie Harnden (Trek) and Daryl Brown (Whyte). It’s a topic we also covered in our podcast earlier this year, so be sure to check that out.

Even if you’ve never had aspirations to get sponsored, there’s plenty you can learn from those who are – as coach-to-the-pros Olly Morris explains on p90. And who knows, maybe one of the new bikes in this issue will help you ride like a star – you’d best check out our First Rides, Launchpad section and enduro bike test, just in case! See you on the trails...
