The festive season is right around the corner – it’s time to put your feet up, turn up the heating, and snuggle down with a hot chocolate and a cosy Christmas film.

If, however, you’re wondering what to do on a day out with the family while the kids are on holiday, we’ve got just the thing. Chatsworth, Derbyshire

Festive opulence

At Chatsworth House, everywhere is decorated on a theme – this year it’s the Palace of Advent. There are 24 rooms to visit, with sights, sounds and smells to tantalise. Leeds Castle, Kent

Fun for everyone

There’s a lot planned at Leeds Castle, Kent, with show-stopping Christmas Lights until December 31, and a Narnia theme inside the Castle with characters including Aslan, the lion. There’s a “Murder Under the Mistletoe” festive dinner on December 2, and Christmas parties on three Saturdays, including dinner and accommodation. Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire

A fairy-tale feeling

Waddesdon Manor has amazing light displays in the gardens, and this year the decorations inside the Manor are themed after classic childhood tales. Visit the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the White Witch’s castle, and Captain Hook’s secret treasure. A new route through the gardens leads you through beautiful illuminations, with music playing to a kaleidoscope of colour. Festive scenes and displays will be projected onto the manor itself.
