Did you know that 80% of British women are unknowingly wearing the wrong size bra, which can cause the breast ligaments to deteriorate and which will, in turn, cause the breasts to sag? It’s a frightening thought, particularly now that the average UK bust size has risen to 36D. So we spoke to Gemma Birtwistle, who is the design and creative manager at lingerie brand Gossard, and asked her how to get it right…

Q: Should new bras should feel uncomfortable?

A: “No,” says Gemma, “a new bra will feel firm but should never hurt. When a bra fits correctly, the underband will firmly hold your breasts in place and elevate the bust. The wire should never sit on your breast tissue, though. If the wires are uncomfortable, you are likely to be wearing the incorrect cup size. To help with comfort, give a new bra a light wash before wearing. It will soften the components providing maximum comfort.”

Q: Can wearing the wrong size bra cause back pain?

A: “Yes. Wearing the correct size bra can help with posture, as your bra underband should support the redistribution of the breast weight, particularly for those with a heavy bust,” says Gemma. “The cups of your bra should contain your breasts without spillage. The wires should sit at the centre, and underarm flat against your body. ”

Q: Can you improvise if your usual size is out of stock?

A: “Yes – if your size is out of stock, you can often ‘sister size’. For example, if you are a 34B, you can go down one back size and go up one cup size for your 32C sister size,” explains Gemma.

Q: Will a good bra last forever?

A: “No,” says Gemma. “Over time, the elastics in your bra no longer return to their original shape after wear and tear. The key trick to see if you need a new bra is to simply raise your arms in the air. If your bra rides up, this means it is no longer providing the support you need and it’s time to invest in a new one.”
