● It’s important to say “no” sometimes. I think we lose the ability as we get older. Plus, many of us are people pleasers. But saying “yes” all the time is exhausting.

It can lead to stress and burnout and won’t leave you with feelings of joy. Believe me when I say that I know this is tricky to do. Knowing that you don’t have to do something is empowering.

● I love being spontaneous. Breaking from your daily routine can bring you endless amounts of joy.

Surprises can be so thrilling. We are all so ruled by the routines that we have built up that often unplanned things can feel difficult to slot in. Before long we become scared of doing something new altogether.

● We should all embrace our inner child more. If it makes you happy, go for it! When your inner child is screaming at you to throw that snowball, roll down that hill or play that game – let go of your inhibitions and do it!

● I try to begin every day with a smile. I have trained myself to step away from a negative narrative at the start of the day.

Instead, I begin each day in a way that makes me feel happy – every single day for many years, the first thing I have done when I wake up is smile. I know that when you’re feeling down and sad, smiling is extremely tough, but it’s been scientifically proven to lift your mood.
