Whether you’re a karaoke queen or prefer to reserve your singing for your ears only, we can all agree that warbling along to our favourite tunes is extremely cathartic.

Music is magical. A random song on the radio can trigger strong memories of a long-forgotten fond memory or give us actual goosebumps.

Singing can be even more powerful and emotional, and releases lots of lovely endorphins. That is exactly why it’s becoming the next best thing in adult wellbeing activities.

It’s especially appealing to those who may have physical disabilities or mobility issues, and why more and more people are turning to singing over activities such as yoga, gardening and aquaerobics.

According to experts, singing is even better for us when we do it together, which is why choirs are gaining in popularity across the UK.

Choirs are the perfect place to meet new people and build your confidence as you sing in harmony with your new friends.

This coming together, regardless of age, talent, race and religion, is a joyful force sweeping the nation; a celebration of song and the simple act of bringing people together in one voice.

That’s the simple message at the heart of World Singing Day, an annual global event that invites everyone to join in song.

This year’s sing-along takes place on October 21 and there are multiple events taking place across the globe, from the UK and Kenya to China and Canada.

Every year, one special song is chosen. The hit of choice for 2023 is Lean On Me by the wonderful American singer and songwriter Bill Withers. With its message of selflessness and supporting others during troubled times, Lean On Me is the perfect pick for bringing people across the world together in song.

It’s simple to take part in World Singing Day, and everyone is invited! You can sing along at home or share it on your social media, using the hashtags #leanonme and #worldsingingday, or you can visit worldsingingday.org to find a local group event near you.
