Well, it’s finally the time of the year when families get together. It’s also that time when you find the words, “Come round to ours for something to eat,” leaving your mouth.

As soon as we extend an invite we all know – unless you’re an old hand at the art of entertaining – it’s going to take time and effort.

Thankfully, our feature on “How To Host Like A Pro” has some top tips to save your bacon. I’m going to add a few of my own thoughts because I once I wrote a book called How to Entertain With Style.

First of all, knowing you have people coming round is often the kick you need to check over a few things.

Like the overflowing coat rack surrounded by so many pairs of shoes you might as well call it Russell and Bromley!

Then there’s the whichever loo your guests will use. Do they really want to be looking at your toothbrush, cleaning products and other personal items? Give them a good clean and put away.

Next, the kitchen.

So much easier to cook, serve and enjoy the process when you have clear surfaces and, if you are short on space, move stuff you don’t need out to a garage, shed or bedroom – anywhere out of the way.
