Surprisingly, perhaps, Sweden is only just switching on to the pleasure of light trails during winter to brighten up the long, dark nights. But this year sees the debut of Winter Lights – a walking trail of magical light and sound – in Skansen, Stockholm’s iconic outdoor museum.

Located on the island of Djurgården, buildings dating back to the 1800s will be brought to life with the latest in creative and sustainable lighting technology, enhancing the unique historical setting frozen in a stunning Swedish landscape.

Displaying over a dozen large custom-made light installations, a bespoke soundscape and a multitude of other special effects and decorations throughout the trail, Winter Lights immerses you in a full sensory experience.

Perfect for all ages as well as accessible, visitors can explore and celebrate the cultural history and natural surroundings of Skansen over a route of around a mile, taking 60-90 minutes.

The trail starts and ends at the Skogaholm Manor, a 10-minute walk from Skansen’s main entrance reached by ferry, bus or tram, and there will be a selection of seasonal food and hot drinks to enjoy along the way, as well as hand-made crafts, home décor and souvenirs for sale, all with sustainability in mind. As it’s an outdoor experience and Sweden can be chilly, be prepared for ice and snow and dress accordingly.

A pair of angel statues near the start of the trail create the concept of flight, with the wings representing the flying birds, insects and animals that silently flit through the trees at Skansen. It’s also the perfect photo opportunity.

The Enchanted Forest is magically lit to show the beauty of the tree trunks and branches silhouetted against the darkness. If you look closely, you may even glimpse a few shy woodland creatures. Children are encouraged to try to spot wildlife along the way such as reindeer, moose, squirrels and owls. Of course, if you go down to the woods at night, you may be in for a big surprise – in the shape of elephants! The museum also celebrates the herd that lived here as recently as 30 years ago.

Book online at eventim.se and enter the trail during your designated 20-minute time slot. This colourful extravaganza remains open until 28 January 2024. Visit lightupyourwinter.com.
