Marvellous Microcurrent

A WORKOUT FOR YOUR FACE NuFACE Mini, £184, Look Fantastic

Microcurrent therapies were first used in medicine. These devices run a low level of electrical voltage between electrodes. They were found to be helpful in healing wounds, rehabilitating muscles and notably in the treatment of Bell’s Palsy, a condition which results in paralysis on one side of the face.

The lifting effects have been adopted by the beauty industry for various treatments, and have migrated to at-home devices, too. Like any treatment, life-changing claims must be taken with a pinch of salt. A microcurrent regimen won’t give you an immediate face lift, but consistent use will show results.

Technically, these devices are not aimed at the skin, but the muscles underneath, as the electrical current forces them to tone up over time, as well as boosting circulation and collagen production.

The result is a lifted and more even appearance, with a softening of fine lines and wrinkles.

As well as being one of the least invasive beauty treatments available, LED (light-emitting diode) light therapy is effective for treating a number of skin concerns.

LED treatments were first rooted in medicine and agriculture. NASA began studying this technology to grow plants in space, and as a side effect found that the hands of the scientists tending to these lit plants were seeing faster healing of wounds on their hands.

Nowadays, LED light therapy can be used on the skin, permeating the layers to gently provide improvements. Red light therapy is great for tackling age-related concerns, penetrating deep into the skin to increase collagen production, combatting wrinkles.

Blue light is effective for calming the uppermost layers of the skin, soothing inflammation and fighting acne-causing bacteria. Yellow light is a great choice to treat redness and reduce melanin production.
