From the obvious rule of not wearing white to paring back loud patterns and textures, the wedding guest dress code comes with a host of unwritten rules designed so that you don’t upstage the most important person in the room – the bride.

This pressure to get your outfit right without offending anyone in the process can cause a lot of unwanted stress, on top of the to-ing and fro-ing over what kind of gift to get, whether you can bring a plus one and more.

So, with this in mind, we sat down with professional personal stylist Anna Mewes (annamewes.com) to chat about all things summer wedding dressing, so that you can show up ready to celebrate as your stylish, sassy self – with zero stress!

The golden rules of dressing as a wedding guest “When it comes to dressing for any special occasion, the pressure can be on to get it right,” shares our personal stylist, Anna Mewes.

“I personally think it’s a great opportunity to get dressed up and have some fun wearing something a little different to your normal day-to-day attire, but to help you navigate wedding guest dressing, here are a few things to consider . . .”

Check the dress code!

It’s not uncommon for happy couples to stipulate dress codes, including themes or specific colours that they may want guests to wear, so be sure to check your invitation before raiding your wardrobe or hitting the shops to buy a new outfit.

Consider the venue

The venue will have a huge bearing on what will be appropriate to wear. If it’s an outdoor, festival-style wedding you’ll want something that nods to this and feels in-keeping with the backdrop, probably an outfit that’s a little more relaxed and certainly shoes that are appropriate for wearing on grass.

However, if it’s an evening ceremony at a posh hotel, you’ll want something more sophisticated and timeless to reflect this.
