Streetwise pro Lucy Hamidzadeh helps our apprentice overcome her fear of shooting solo

Lucy’s first DSLR was a Nikon D3100, but when she tried a friend’s Sony, she decided to go mirrorless. It would be the Nikon Z f that brought her back to the Big N, where she featured in a video on the new camera for Nikon Asia. Lucy’s love for street art developed from attending an Instagram photography meet 14 years ago. She’s since left behind a career in content marketing to become a freelance photographer, and has even produced a book, Lucy Hamidzadeh: Unfinished

THE APPRENTICE

NAME: Paula Irvine

CAMERA: Nikon Z 7II

NHS worker Paula was given a bridge camera 14 years ago, to document her first child growing up. She moved onto a D3000-series DSLR, but photography was still an occasional hobby. Once her children reached their teens, she picked up a D750 and began searching for new subjects. As it turns out, she needed a laboratory-grade microscope to find them, turning her hand to photomicrography. Still, her dream is to capture street photos. Here’s hoping Lucy can help build her confidence.

Many pro photographers carry a high-end Nikon camera and lens, a large technical backpack and look like they’ve fallen through Cotswold Outdoor backwards…

But not Lucy Hamidzadeh. The street photographer’s faux fur coat,Nikon Zf and bum bag certainly buck the trend –and it’s entirely intentional.

“I keep things light, and don’t wear bright clothes that attract attention,” she said to Paula as they sipped coffee in a Covent Garden cafe. “The same applies to my camera.” Paula cradled Lucy’s brand-new Nikon Zf. “I do love the different colour options,” said Lucy, “but Ihad to have the standard black version because it doesn’t stand out quite so much. I bought ared strap for it,” she held up the black strap that was now attached to the camera, “and when it arrived, Iwas like, what asilly thing to do. Everyone would have noticed it.”
