A pro photographer for more than a decade, known for his endurance racing images… and Octane 196’s Ferrari 166 cover feature

GEARBOX

1 I only occasionally use my Leica for client work. It’s manual exposure and focus and wonderfully mechanical, a beautiful thing to hold and use. Taking a picture is a slower process, but it makes me think before I press the shutter – not a bad mindset to carry over to my work.

2 I’d fancied an old advertising sign for ages but going online and ordering one from a specialist seemed a bit soulless. When I saw this in a secondhand shop on a European road trip, it was meant to be.

3 I was official photographer for Ford when its GTs returned to racing in 2016. I was sent this commemorative bodywork with a card signed by Bill Ford after Le Mans and at the end of the programme I also received a note of thanks from the head of PR. It means a lot when people recognise how much I put into my work.

4 I only have one model racing car, a 2009 Lola Aston Martin from the first team I worked with as its official photographer. It was an exciting time in my career and I worked with some brilliant people, a lot of whom I’m still friends with.

5 This book was a gift from my parents when I was just starting photography and was a huge inspiration to me. A few years ago I met its author, Reinhard Klein, who kindly signed my copy. A fascinating man and brilliant company.

6 I don’t go out of my way to collect old 1:64 scale models, but if I see one in a secondhand or vintage shop I’ll often buy it. I like having something to remind me of fun trips – these four are from the UK, France and Canada.
