The next day saw the Auster and the TR side by side at the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation display. We had again determined that the TR3 was victorious in fuel economy but the aircraft easily scored for travelling time.

On the Sunday morning, in front of a large crowd, the current Duke of Richmond reprised his grandfather’s role and presented the TR Register’s winner’s cheque for £500. I enjoyed James Elliott’s feature on the Iso Rivolta in Octane 243, my favourite Iso since I saw it in my new 1964 Observer’s Book of Automobiles, aged 12.

James’ intro on terminology got me thinking about what I have been doing to my cars since I retired. My changes to the Lotus ‘wedge’ Elite, Jensen-Healey [below] and even the Vauxhall Viva HC have all been aimed at creating looks that could have been offered by their makers.

It occurred to me that in the magazine world, articles are created by journalists and adjusted to suit by editors. So am I editing my cars? Dik Stapley, Lincolnshire

Lost in space – and time

Someone should buy Stephen Bayley a map of New York City (Octane 242). I, too, have enjoyed the ‘pleasure of surfing the green lights’ from uptown to downtown in Manhattan, but one can’t surf from Central Park to Broadway on East River Drive. Moreover, East River Drive has been called FDR Drive ever since it was renamed following the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945.
