Overlander 4x4 Magazine
8 September 2023
In this month’s 4X4 Magazine, we take you properly off-road in a supreme Bentley Bentayga 4.0. Riding in the S model, we opt away from the hybrid and treat ourselves to the S model’s terrific twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine. The Bentayga is gargantuan, so it needs its V8’s power, yet despite its size, the Bentayga is astonishingly agile, with manoeuvrability we could only marvel at. Equipped with 22” tyres and suspension that manages its weight with ease, this high-end, luxury Bentley also has no traditional off-road hardware. A bold decision, that seemingly has had no negative effects on the Bentayga’s performance off-road. Turning away from the luxury of a Bentley 4X4 SUV, we delve into Jeep’s Rubicon departure, referring to their new concept Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The glaringly noticeable changes to this Jeep will be its complete lack of cover from the elements, and its military-style aesthetic. However, if you read into the details, Jeep just about mention that this Jeep will run on GREEN energy. Yes, this is a PHEV Jeep, and outwardly, a noteworthy departure both aesthetically and mechanically from the familiar Wrangler popularised by the American car manufacturers. Most likely a work of fantasy, this concept model certainly is unique, and well worth a read about. Looking back to a ‘lockdown project’, we discover a desirable Defender 110 that has been modified into a ‘slick overland camper’ by its owner Mark Woodland. Refurbished originally with the idea of a post-lockdown expedition to Morocco in mind, this Landy is yet to embark on a worldwide tour, something that a potential new owner could change. The 110 is ex-military and is unusually powered by a 200Tdi engine, and in addition to this, it only has 74,000 miles clocked on it. This might seem like a lot of mileage, but for a Tdi, it’s not much to worry about. There is certainly a lot to entertain and stimulate your mind in this issue of 4X4 Magazine, too much to mention here in fact. But a couple of particularly exciting features to leave you looking forward to might be our coverage of Rallye Breslau or ‘Europe’s Dakar’ as it’s referred to, and the fascinating student project going on at Skoda with their Roadiaq model. Let’s just say that Skoda’s students have gone above and beyond to keep this off-roader very much online for any budding adventurer.
