From organic materials to man-made fibres, the best carpets and rugs will bring soft style and add depth to an interior scheme

Autumn brings with it a drop in temperature that has us all looking for ways to cosy up our homes. One way to add instant warmth is through carpets or rugs. Not only do they feel soft and comforting underfoot, but will also help to retain the heat and offer valuable sound insulation, resulting in a cocooning atmosphere – the perfect antidote to frosty days. Softer underfoot than sisal or seagrass, jute is created from the stalks of the Corchorus plant, which are spun into a soft cotton-like fibre. Natural carpets have a reputation for being hard to clean, but simply spot-treating any stains with diluted vinegar will keep it looking its best. Birdie Fortescue’s handcrafted Cucito jute rug has been embellished with a beautiful stitched wool and cotton design, from £350.

Feeling sheepish

Wool carpets are loved for their soft texture and traditional aesthetic but the benefits are far more than just superficial. ‘As a natural “smart” fibre, wool improves air quality in the home and absorbs humidity, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry,’ explains Alexandra Hindle from Cormar Carpet Co. ‘Another benefit of wool is its durability. Wool has a natural crimp so it can bounce back after being trodden on, allowing the carpet to retain its newlylaid appearance for longer.’ Cormar Carpet Co’s Fairisle 100 per cent wool carpet in Cinnamon costs £35 per m22.

Between the lines

A striped carpet is a statement piece. ‘Stripes add direction to an interior, creating a sense of flow and guidance to the space. It pulls us into a room with the stripe leading the way,’ says Claire Kimble, senior design manager at Crucial Trading. ‘Don’t be afraid to play with stripes; consider juxtaposing them against each other, colour clashing, or overlaying to add a touch of whimsy to a scheme.’ Featured is Crucial Trading’s Fabulous wool carpet in Emerald, £201 per m22.

Upward trend

Runners bridge the gap between aesthetics and practicality. The perfect partner for wooden or stone stairs, a stair runner – such as Roger Oates’ Hanbury design in stone, from £149.50 per m – will protect the treads from degrading with wear as well as increasing traction underfoot, softening noise and bringing a new textural dimension to a staircase. ‘Traditionally stair rods were the sole means of securing runners but today, the use of a gripper is preferred as it provides a more secure finish. Stair rods are an optional extra and now serve as décor,’ says Jane Armstrong, managing director. ‘A good quality rubber crumb underlay will also provide extra comfort and soften the noise.’
