Wood-clad walls are synonymous with the cabin look but instead embrace a beautiful alpine-themed wallpaper. Inspired by Galtür, a pretty mountain village in Austria’s Tyrol region, this design from Mind the Gap would look wonderful as a feature wall. ‘The background features a rich amber that brings the warmth and colour of a wooden lodge – pair with deep forest greens and highlights of sky blue for an authentic and inviting feel,’ advises Stefan Ormenisan, founder and creative director. Galtür of Tyrol wallpaper in Amber Gold, £219 for three rolls; Winston Tufted sofa in Cambridge Sage leather, £6,600, both Mind the Gap.

Given today’s technology-saturated world, the idea of retreating to a remote cabin to reconnect with nature has never been more appealing. From alpine chalets and mountain lodges to Scandinavian lakeside homes, there is plenty of inspiration when it comes to cosy cabin style.

Conjuring up visions of timber-clad buildings set in sweeping rural vistas, cabins appeal to our sense of wanderlust and adventure. With humble beginnings as rudimentary, functional shelters, they have evolved across the centuries to become permanent residences and boutique stays. ‘When the pandemic stopped a lot of overseas travel, a variety of unique rural retreats popped up for those looking for an alternative to holidays abroad. The idea of switching off our phones and living off-grid in a rustic cabin or lodge sounded heavenly – surrounded by beautifully crafted objects and forests to go on long ambles,’ explains Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed. ‘Fast forward to today, and the romance of this way of living is manifesting itself as a contemporary lifestyle trend that people are bringing into their own homes,’ she adds.

Inside, cabins have warmth and rustic charm at their core. They offer an inviting escape to the dramatic landscapes that surround them, while also reflecting the beautiful tones and textures of nature. Timber-clad walls, crackling fires, warm, earthy colours, distressed surface
