Professional models have an integrated battery grip that helps to balance the weight of longer lenses; for other models it’s worth adding a battery grip for balance and extra battery life. High-speed continuous shooting is important to capture the peak of the action, and electronic shutter modes allow up to 30fps on some cameras. You’ll mostly shoot with the viewfinder so choose a camera that you find comfortable and adjust the dioptre for your eyes.

Canon-fit lenses

Longer lenses such as the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM are good to bring distant action closer, though many professionals use the faster and expensive prime lenses. It’s worth renting large lenses if motorsport is just an occasional subject. Smaller grassroots motorsport events enable you to get closer to the action, so you’ll find that a 70-200mm lens with a f/2.8 or f/4 aperture are great. A lens with image stabilisation helps to stabilise the image for the camera AF system to focus accurately. RF 70-200mm lenses can’t be used with extenders, so consider using an EF version with an extender on a mount adapter.

BUDGET OPTIONS

THE EOS R10 and EOS R7 are great choices for motorsport on a more modest budget, and with their APS-C sized sensor there’s a welcome increase in lens’s effective focal length. Both cameras have the latest vehicle tracking AF from the full-frame models, and fast continuous shooting in electronic shutter
