Aces High
Canon Legend Bruce Dorn describes how he took these incredible portraits on an Arizona airfield in wartime tribute
I considermyself to be a stor y teller – one with a long career as a producer, director, cinematographer, and photographer. Back in 2016, I was a Canon Explorer of Light and tasked with creating a series of images to support the launch of the EOS 5D Mark I V.
The series of pictures I came up with for my Aces High theme were inspired by a replica P-51 Mustang fighter – one whose full-sized WWII original might have flown out of England as a bomber escort. The existence of a single inspirational element – be it a prop, an interesting bit of wardrobe, or a striking new muse – is enough to kick my imagination into overdrive. In this instance I had all three! With so much beaut y at hand I quick ly concocted a series of juicy scenes from my imaginary movie, Aces High.
In these graphic-novel-like images, I collaborated with my model and muse Stephanie Worstein (@stephersworst) to create a Tigress – abrave Women’s Airforce Ser vice Pilot who, due to horrific Allied losses in the skies over Europe, is unexpectedly pressed into ser vice as a full-on fighter pilot in the conflict.
